Gippsland Critical Minerals (GCM) has supplied more than 1,300 acres of farmland on reduced-rate leases, backing local industry and ensuring the next generation of East Gippsland farmers continue to grow and thrive.
Through discounted three-year leases, with an option for a further three, the Young Farmer Program gives local talent secure land access at up to 20% below market rates.
Four young farming families in Fernbank and Lindenow South represent the program’s first tranche, with recipients receiving the early support needed to establish and grow their businesses.
Supporting young people to pursue farming careers is vital to the future of regional Australia. Farming remains the backbone of many local economies, yet rising land costs make it increasingly difficult for younger generations to enter the industry.
According to the Grains Research and Development Corporation, farm leasing typically costs BETWEEN 4 to 6% of land value each year, already a more accessible pathway than buying outright.
GCM’s reduced-rate leases give young farmers the security to plan ahead and the confidence to invest in stock, equipment and new ideas. Lowering barriers to entry, the program helps emerging farming talent take root in East Gippsland, strengthening local agriculture and fostering innovation and renewal.
GCM CEO Michelle Wood said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to regional prosperity.
“Farming is the backbone of regional Australia, and young farmers are its future. This program gives them the confidence to grow their businesses and shows how projects like Fingerboards can deliver lasting benefits for East Gippsland.”
Recipient Madison Gallagher said the lease provides the security and opportunity to grow her farming future.
“This lease means I can focus on building up my farm without the pressure of huge upfront costs. It gives me the chance to invest properly in stock and equipment and build a long-term future in East Gippsland.”
Backing regional youth and strengthening East Gippsland’s farming future reflects GCM’s broader vision for the Fingerboards Project, emerging industry with agriculture, create jobs and contributing to Australia’s sovereign supply chains.
There has already been strong interest in the program, with further tranches to be made available in future rounds.
